Semender residents oppose construction of dogs’ shelter

Residents of the Makhachkala settlement of Semender have held an action with a demand from officials to abandon the project of building an animal shelter in the territory of an abandoned farm. The shelter will be located close to residential buildings, they have stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the animal shelter is created on the base of an abandoned farm, located on the border of two Makhachkala settlements – Leninkent and Semender.

After the death of a nine-year-old girl from the dog bites, on February 19, Makhachkala started catching stray animals. They are shot dead by Makhachkala residents themselves, animal rights activists assert.

According to the "Chernovik" weekly, Abdulmumin Ibragimov, the Deputy Mayor of Makhachkala, invited Semender residents to Mayoralty on February 27, "to study the problem."

Meanwhile, activists of the organization named "Ecolife" claim that animal defenders had not been attracted to the shelter construction project. According to their version, officials "are hastily creating a corral for dogs, in order to report that the shelter has been built."

Animal rights defenders also believe that the place for the shelter is small; therefore, it is necessary first to catch big dogs, those sick with rabies, which are a real threat. In the future, aggressive animals should be castrated; and those in need of lulling should be lulled in a humane way, the edition “Kavkaz. Realities” reports.
