US citizen sentenced on charge of terrorism detained in Georgia

A US citizen sentenced in absentia in Uzbekistan on the charge of terrorism has been detained at the airport in Batumi. This was reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia.

According to the Georgian MIA, the detainee is a US citizen, born in 1978; he was wanted by Interpol at the request of Tashkent.

"As a result of a joint operation, staff members of Tbilisi Interpol and personnel of the checkpoint 'Batumi Airport' of the Chief Department of the Ajara Directorate of the MIA's patrol police detained at Batumi airport the US citizen wanted at the international level by Tashkent Interpol," the RIA "Novosti" quotes a source from the Georgian MIA.

The US citizen was found guilty under several articles of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan, including articles about terrorism, creation of a criminal organization, commitment of a sabotage attack, as well as unlawful seizure of ammunition. At present, the issue of his extradition to Uzbekistan is under consideration, Sputnik reports today with reference to the Georgian MIA.
