Akhmedli's defence blames investigators for ignoring request for medical examination

More than two weeks have expired since the submission of a request for a medical examination of the Azerbaijani activist Fuad Akhmedli to determine if he can stay in custody. Despite the urgency of the request, investigators would not react, said the activist's advocate.

On August 18, Fuad Akhmedli, the head of the Khatai branch of the PFPA's Youth Committee, was detained and charged with distributing of personal information of subscribers of the mobile company, where he worked. After the merger of his case with the case of Faig Amirov, another PFPA activist, investigators suspected Akhmedli of supporting the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen, who was accused in Turkey of a putsch attempt.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the on December 14, 2016, the defence of Akhmedli sent a request to investigators demanding a medical examination of the activist. The law does not prescribe any specific deadline for considering such requests, but the defence urged to consider the request as soon as possible, because Akhmedli needs regular examinations and treatment of his pulmonary disease. According to the defence, at the SIZO (pre-trial prison) the activist cannot receive the due medical care.

On December 31, 2016, Fuad Mustafaev, Asabali's advocate, visited him at the SIZO.

"Fuad keeps good spirits, and he passed his congratulations on the holiday to his relatives, friends and colleagues; however, despite his high morale, Fuad still has serious health problems in connection with the aggravation of his old pulmonary disease," the advocate told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent today.

According to his story, the defence has received no answer to the request lodged back on December 14, 2016.

"We'll take appropriate steps in the context of investigators' inaction and lodge a complaint to the court," said Mustafaev.
