Rally in Makhachkala complains about pogrom in park

Today, about 50 residents of Makhachkala came out to protest against the construction of a high rise building in the vicinity of General Omarov Street.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported about protests of residents of the Leninsky District of Makhachkala against the build-up of the park area along General Omarov Street. Thus, on November 13, residents of Makhachkala demanded to stop the construction of a high-rise building in this area, expressing concern that the new house would aggravate traffic jams and problems with power and water supplies.

According to organizers, the event was about 50 people strong. They gathered, because of the fact that "unidentified persons broke the young trees planted on the eve in that part of the park, which they are trying to build up."

"Earlier, the administration of Makhachkala stated that the construction was illegal; it was decided to suspend the process; then, residents of our district filled in the pit by themselves," said Gadji Gadjiev, a resident of Erlikh Street.

Another local resident named Abdul has added, in his turn, that the neighbourhood "has actually no more park areas left."

The rally has expressed concern that "the situation with protests against construction in the park zone may spin out of control." They added that they "visited the police station and reported the damage of young trees in the park."
