ECtHR grants complaints filed by six Azerbaijani oppositionists

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has found violation of rights of six Azerbaijani oppositionists who were detained for involvement in a mourning procession in 2014 and then arrested. The ECtHR obliged Azerbaijan to pay in favour of activists the compensation in the total amount of 78,000 euros.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 26, 2014, in Baku, activists held the mourning ceremony on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy. The police tried to stop the procession and to use force against Ali Kerimli, the leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA). A number of PFPA activists, including Djabbar Savalan, Ilham Gusein, Tofiq Dadashev, Tazakhan Miralamli, Bakhruz Gasanli, Turkel Alisoi, and Agaverdi Rushanov, were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and failure to obey the police. The activists' appeals were dismissed.

On November 24, the ECtHR considered the complaints filed by six PFPA activists, including Ilham Gusein, Tazakhan Miralamli, Bakhruz Gasanov, Tofiq Dadashev, Turkel Alisoi, and Agaverdi Rushanov, and found them justified, the European Court's website reports.

The ECtHR obliged Azerbaijan to pay compensation of 12,000 euros to each of the complainants and to compensate them for court costs amounting to 6 million euros, the ECtHR's website reports.
