Volgograd: residents hold mourning rally to commemorate victims of political repressions

Today, in Volgograd, a mourning rally has taken place near the monument to the victims of political repressions. According to the organizers, the memorial event was attended by 52 residents of Volgograd.

Every year, on October 30, Russia marks the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions, set by the Resolution of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic) No. 1763/1-I dated October 18, 1991, "On establishment of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions".

During the rally, residents of Volgograd laid flowers at the monument to the victims of political repressions.

In his conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, Yan Rachinsky, a member of the board of the international NGO "Memorial", has noted that Russia "still has no state programme to perpetuate the memory of victims of repressions." "And so, we have a dozen regions which still have no monuments to the victims of political repressions," emphasized the human rights defender.

He has also paid attention to the extremely small amounts of the compensation, currently paid to repressed persons and their relatives.

"If a former political prisoner applies today for compensation, then he will be paid only 75 roubles for each month spent in camps. And although the Constructional Court has already twice pointed to the need to revise the amounts of compensation, the Russian authorities have not yet responded to the repeated appeals on the problem," noted Yan Rachinsky.
