Khaiser Djemilev complains about Russia and Ukraine to the ECtHR

Khaiser Djemilev has complained to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg   Court about Russia and Ukraine, his advocate Nikolai Polozov said today.

On June 10, 2015, Khaiser, a son of Mustafa Djemilev, the head of the Crimean Tatars, was found guilty of a manslaughter and theft and possession of a firearm and sentenced to 3.5 years of colony. He is serving his term in Astrakhan; it expires on November 26.

"Today, it was important for me to focus on the violation of Khaiser's rights, primarily of his right to access the justice; and on the strange situation with his lost passport (on September 30, Khaiser Djemilev told the court that his Ukrainian passport was taken away from him in 2013; however, he did not receive the Russian citizenship, – note of the "Caucasian Knot")," said the advocate.

Nikolai Polozov hopes that the ECtHR "will give a fair assessment of violations of Khaiser Djemilev's rights." The advocate has noted that both Russia and Ukraine, which "failed to respect the Khaiser's conventional rights," are respondents in the ECtHR's case.

"It turns out that they had tried a foreign citizen, who had no ID documents, in Russia," said the advocate.
