Defence treats sentence to Zhamal Tumenov as harsh

The verdict to resident of Nalchik Zhamal Tumenov, convicted for involvement in a terrorist organization, will be appealed in the Supreme Court of Russia, said his advocate.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Tumenov was detained early in 2016. He was accused of involvement in a structural division of the "Islamic State" (IS) (an extremist organization banned in Russia). According to investigators, in September 2015 Tumenov provided militants with money; he helped them to move secretly and stored weapons and ammunition. On July 22, the court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced him to 4 years in a general-security colony with a further freedom restriction for six months.

The defence treats the verdict as too harsh, because the convict had repented and actively helped the investigators, the "Kommersant" reports.

In Kabardino-Balkaria, members of the republic's commission for adaptation of former militants asked the court, after considering Tumenov's application, not to sentence him to imprisonment. The applicant himself explained his assistance to Yuri Bitsuev, one of the leaders of republic's militants by the fear for his family.
