ECtHR finds Russia responsible for death of Manana Djabeliya
According to the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), Russian authorities are obliged to pay 70,000 euros to the family of the citizen of Georgia Manana Djabeliya, who died in a Moscow detention centre for foreign nationals in 2006, the advocate of the Djabeliya family has announced today.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Manana Djabeliya died on December 2, 2006, in the Moscow detention centre for foreigners.
The 51-year-old Manana Djabeliya was detained on October 4, 2006, when her passport was under the change procedure at the Consulate of Georgia. The Nagatino Court sentenced her to deportation to Georgia, but this decision was appealed against by way of cassation, which suspended her forced deportation. The woman spent almost two months at the detention centre waiting for an answer; meanwhile, her health deteriorated. Two days before her death, the Moscow City Court (MCC) quashed the deportation decision, thus confirming that Ms Djabeliya was in Moscow on legal grounds.
The ECtHR has obliged Russian authorities to pay compensation to the family of Manana Djabeliya in the amount of 70,000 euros, Pavle Beriya, the family's advocate, has reported today.
According to his story, an agreement on the payment with Russia has already been achieved; besides, Russia will reimburse all the court costs, the "Interfax" reports.
