Yerevan woman holds protest action in non-working fountain

On May 24, Yerevan hosted an action initiated by women-activists: one of them – Anna Shakhnazaryan – climbed up into a stone structure of "Singing Fountains" in Republic Square, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

According to the police, the woman was sitting silently in the non-working fountain. Policemen took her out of the structure and offered medical help, which was rejected by Ms Shakhnazaryan.

Anna Shakhnazaryan has noted that "she doesn't want to comment on her actions; and leaves the idea and the aim of the action to the discretion of the public."

"People need to understand what state bureaucrats are doing," Anna Shakhnazaryan told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, adding that "the action might be a long one."

For the first time a similar action was held on May 17 by Armine Arakelyan, the founder of the public organization "Institute for Human Rights and Democracy". Then, rescuers put Arakelyan into an ambulance and brought to the "Nubarashen" psychiatric centre. Later, she was released.
