On May 9-15, at least 30 people suffered during armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week from May 9 to May 15, 2016, in the course of the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus, at least 30 people suffered; of them, at least seven persons were killed and at least 23 others were wounded. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

The death toll includes one civilian and two power agents in Dagestan, and four alleged member of the armed underground – two in Dagestan and two in Chechnya.

Attacks on law enforcers

On May 12, near the village of Talgi in the Buynaksk District of Dagestan, policemen tried to stop a Volkswagen minivan to check the documents; however, the driver would not stop; and fire was opened from inside at the policemen. In the shootout, the man, who was in the minivan, was shot dead.

Special and counterterrorist operations

On May 14, policemen attempted to check an apartment in Derbent in Krepostnaya Street, where the suspects of murdering of Gadjiakhmed Kaziakhmedov, the father of the former Mayor of the city, Felix Kaziakhmedov, were hiding. However, the criminals opened automatic fire. The apartment was stormed. In the course of a special operation, two police captains were killed: the 39-year-old Musa Musaev, the head of the criminal investigation of the OMVD (Interior Division) of the city of Derbent; and the 33-year-old Victor Timofeev, a SOBR (an analogue of SWAT) officer of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) from the Tyumen Region. 17 other policemen were wounded. According to the Investigating Department for Dagestan of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF), Bairamali Abasov was killed. The attack was undertaken by militants of the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia, its information resources have reported.

Explosions and terror acts

On May 9, two armed men attacked a checkpoint located in the outskirt of the village of Alkhan-Kala in the Grozny District. One of the attackers blew himself up by an improvised explosive device (IED), wounding six policemen. The second attacker was shot dead. The attackers were identified as the 27-year-old Shamil Djanaraliev and the 25-year-old Akhmet Inalov, residents of the Zavodskoy District of Grozny. The attack wounded the officers of the Russian MIA from Bashkortostan: Senior Police Lieutenant Azat Shaimuratov, Lieutenants Vildan Kashapov, Rustam Latipov and Ildar Islamov, and Senior Sergeants Evgeny Chumachenko and Radik Bikmurzin.

Attacks on civilians

On May 9, the body of the 82-year-old Gadjiakhmed Kaziakhmedov, the father of the former Mayor of Derbent Felix Kaziakhmedov, was found in his house with gunshot wounds. The killer escaped. Prior to his retirement, the casualty worked as Director of the Derbent Teachers' College. According to one version, Kaziakhmedov could be killed by the robbers, whom he found at home. According to another version, the murder could be an act of retaliation by extremists. Seifudin Kaziakhmedov, killed in 2009, was also Gadjiakhmed Kaziakhmedov's son; and his youngest son – Marat – a Lieutenant Colonel, is an employee of the Prosecutor's Office of Dagestan.

Detentions

On May 11, Magomed Magomedov, the official representative of the Salafi mosque situated in Hungarian Warriors Street, was detained. According to employees of the mosque, during his search, some weapons were planted on Magomedov. On May 13, the Sovietsky District Court of Makhachkala arrested Magomedov on suspicion of illegal possession of weapons and narcotic drugs.

On May 11, the MIA of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania reported on the detention of a group of arms dealers, who had given to their client a Kalashnikov submachine gun and 8 rounds of ammunition, after which they were detained by agents of Special Forces. According to law enforcers, this grouping had made several arms deals.

On May 13, in the capital of Dagestan, in the course of a raid, law enforcers detained at least 20 parishioners of the Salafi mosque. The Sovietsky ROVD (District Interior Division) of Makhachkala later stated that after checking the documents all the detainees were released.

On May 15, in Ingushetia, a 23-year-old resident of the city of Karabulak was detained; he was suspected of recruiting into the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS). During a search of the detainee's house, homemade grenade was found (a so-called "khattabka").
