Film dedicated to Circassian Elmeskhan Hagundokova to be shown at party of her memory at MGIMO

The evening in memory of Elmeskhan Hagundokova, a Circassian native, Chevalier (Knight) of the Legion of Honour of France, is to be held at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (known as MGIMO) on May 13. The event will present the film "Circassian Woman" directed by Askarbiy Nagaplev and dedicated to Elmeskhan Hagundokova.

"Elmeskhan Hagundokova is a person, who became a legend. She was a surprisingly fearless brave woman, whose whole life was devoted to serving and saving others," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Leyla Kanametova, an organizer of the evening, a candidate for a master's degree at the MGIMO, a member of the Kabardino-Balkarian community.

Elmeskhan Hagundokova was Countess Irene de Lyuar, who was in charge of a surgical unit and a mobile hospital in the French Resistance. Later, she organized a mobile surgical hospital in North Africa and moved with her medical staff to Italy in the midst of war, where she saved hundreds of lives during the Battle of Monte Cassino. She took part in the liberation of Italy and was awarded the Legion of Honour by French President General de Gaulle.

Elmeskhan Hagundokova originated from an influential Circassian family, which members emigrated after the October Revolution to Europe from Northern Caucasus, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was explained by Naima Neflyasheva, Senior Researcher of the Centre for Civilizational and Regional Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

The film "Circassian Woman" is devoted to an image of a woman belonging to the Circassian nation, formed from ancient times until now, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Askarbiy Nagaplev, the film director. "While telling the stories of Circassian women, representing the nation, we wanted to show the inner world of a Circassian woman," the film director has explained. The film focuses on the story of Elmeskhan Hagundokova.
