Lawsuit brought against Dagestani prosecutor after his remarks about "clothes of militants' wives"

Relatives of Omar Magomedov, a local resident, accused of helping militants and illegal arms and drug dealing, have lodged a lawsuit to the Sovietskiy District Court of Makhachkala on protection of their honour, dignity and compensation of moral harm. According to the claimants, at Magomedov's trial, the prosecutor had insulted them by naming the Muslim headscarf "a typical garment of militants' wives."

"The state prosecutor has filed a petition asking to hold a closed trial because of alleged threats addressed to him by Magomedov's relatives. In support of his petition... he said that when he was leaving the building of the Sovietskiy District Court, he heard a couple of phrases about his nationality, in which he was called 'a kafir' (in Islam, it means a person, who has committed 'a kufr', that is, an infidel – note of the 'Caucasian Knot')," says the lawsuit.

The "Caucasian Knot" was told by Nadezhda Ermolaeva, a Magomedov's advocate, on February 18, during a court session, the prosecutor, according to her version, said that he could not recognize among those present in the courtroom the one who had threatened him, because the majority of those present "are dressed in traditional clothes of militants' wives."

"It is obvious that the statements that Magomedov's relatives were dressed in traditional clothes of militants' wives, as well as the fact that someone from Magomedov's relatives had called the prosecutor 'a kafir' and addressed threats to him, are accusing the claimants of committing a criminally-punishable actions and discredit their honour and dignity," Ms Ermolaeva believes.
