Inmates of Nalchik SIZO stop their hunger strike, local FSIN reports

In Nalchik, inmates of the SIZO (pre-trial prison) No. 1 have stopped their hunger strike yet in the evening of April 12. This was reported by the Department for Kabardino-Balkaria of the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN).

The "Caucasian Knot" has informed that on April 11, relatives of the SIZO inmate reported that illegal actions of staff members of the Nalchik SIZO provoked a mass hunger strike, which went unnoticed. According to the relatives, 24 people committed suicide attempts at the Nalchik SIZO No. 1, and one more man cut his veins at the court hearing.

"At present, the official check on the incident is underway, and the penitentiary institution is operating normally. The situation in the unit continues to be stable and controlled," states the today's reports posted on the website of the FSIN Department for Kabardino-Balkaria.

Let us remind you that on April 11, members of the Kabardino-Balkarian Public Monitoring Commission (PMC) met inmates of the Nalchik SIZO No. 1. According to the PMC, inmates of the Nalchik SIZO complained about being beaten.
