Residents of Chechnya reports about forcing to participate in subbotniks

Since March 27, Chechnya is holding mass subbotniks (voluntary Saturday clean-ups); and the all-republic clean-up will be held on April 1-30. State servants in Grozny complain about being forced to participate in subbotniks.

"Yesterday, we had to clean the territory and paint the kerbs. We were told that we'll take part in daily local subbotniks, and on weekends we'll have to go out to mass subbotniks to be held all over the republic. In Chechnya, every spring starts with subbotniks," Zarina, an employee of one of the republic's ministries, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

State servants note that participation in subbotniks "is same mandatory, as participation in rallies and other actions organized by the authorities."

"I personally don't understand why I should spend my time or a day-off to do the work of communal services. What are they paid their salaries for, if other people make their job?" Khizir, a resident of Chechnya, asked in his interview to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
