SC finds no grounds for criminal proceedings on complaints filed by Klykh and Karpyuk about torture

The Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya has started to study the materials of the inspection carried out to check the complaint of Nikolai Karpyuk about torture. Investigators found no grounds for institution of criminal proceedings.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the case against Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh is considered by the Supreme Court of the Chechen Republic with the involvement of jury starting from October 27, 2015. The recent meeting took place on March 24.

The defendants are charged with involvement in killing of at least 30 soldiers during the first Chechen war campaign. Karpyuk and Klykh deny their involvement in the conflict in Chechnya and filed a complaint about the use of torture during the investigation.

"My client says he has not met an advocate on March 28... We believe he was deprived of his right to a defender," noted advocate Itslaev.

According to Marina Dubrovina, an advocate of Stanislav Klykh, the materials against her client came only two days ago, and she has not enough time to review them.

Today, the court is to question two defence witnesses through a video conference, but "because of a technical failure," the court was unable to start the video conference. The court session was postponed to March 28. According to Itslaev, the court was to question a former soldier and his mother, who witnessed those events.
