Two journalists beaten up in Dagestan
Two Dagestani freelance journalists, a young woman being one of them, told the "Caucasian Knot" that they were beaten up today at the opening ceremony of a sports ground in Makhachkala by a senior republic's official.
According to the victims, the official started the brawl because of their appearance, demonstrating, in his opinion, their belonging to Islam. The female journalist wore a hijab, while her colleague has a beard. The incident occurred in the eyes of people, who came to the opening ceremony of the sports ground, said the victims.
The eyewitnesses of the incident have confirmed the journalists' words.
The journalists also said that representative of the agency, headed by the official in question, had contacted them. He explained the incident by the fact that the official had been several times attacked by militants; therefore, "he hates everyone dressed in religious clothes."
