PACE President calls on Azerbaijani authorities to fulfil ECtHR's decisions
During his visit to Azerbaijan, Pedro Agramunt, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), has announced the need for execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in the cases of sentenced activists Ilgar Mamedov and Tofiq Yagublu.
Pedro Agramunt was on an official visit to Azerbaijan in the period from February 29 to March 1. On the last day of his visit, he met Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the movement "Republican Alternative" (ReAl), serving his prison sentence in the penal colony No. 2.
On his Twitter page, Pedro Agramunt has also written that he had "a positive discussion on human rights and economic challenges with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev." Besides, on February 29, he met a son and a daughter of oppositionist Tofiq Yagublu.
On March 17, 2014, Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the movement "ReAl", and Tofiq Yagublu, Deputy Chairman of the "Musavat" Party, were sentenced to seven and five years of imprisonment on the charge of organizing riots in the town of Ismayilli in 2013. Ilgar Mamedov and Tofiq Yagublu pleaded not guilty. In May 2014, the ECtHR found a violation of the rights of Ilgar Mamedov and obliged the Azerbaijani government to pay him compensation in the amount of 22,000 euros. On November 5, 2015, the ECtHR made the similar decision in the case of Tofiq Yagublu and obliged the Azerbaijani authorities to pay him 24,000 euros.
Following the results of his visit, Pedro Agramunt made an official statement, which was published on the official website of the PACE.
