In Volgograd, builders of cathedral find human remains
In Volgograd, the excavation at the place of the construction of the future Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was halted after builders brought to the surface fragments of human bones and potteries. Experts are to identify the remains.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in November 2015, in Volgograd, participants of public hearings supported the project for the construction of the cathedral in honour of Alexander Nevsky initiated by Orthodox religious figures. On February 16, builders started excavation works.
On February 18, the discoveries made during the excavation works were reported by Evgeny Kruglov, the head of the archaeology section of the regional branch of the All-Russian Society for Protection of Monuments of History and Culture. According to him, the workers brought to the surface fragments of human remains and utensils items, such as potteries, the "AIF-Volgograd" reports.
According to Evgeny Kruglov, experts are to identify the remains and the age of the items discovered by the builder.
Let us remind you that on February 17, residents of Volgograd began collecting signatures under an online petition demanding not to start construction of the cathedral in Square of Fallen Fighters. Residents of Volgograd believe that the cathedral will ruin the historic city centre and will deteriorate the socio-political situation. Besides, some residents of Volgograd have expressed their concern that the construction of the cathedral can result in a split in the society.
