In Azerbaijan, father of prisoner reports on violent death of his son

In Azerbaijan, prisoner Nourani Ibragimov died at the penitentiary institution No. 6. According to his farther, the prisoner's body bears numerous signs of physical violence. Officials from the Azerbaijani Ministry of Justice (MoJ) have confirmed the fact of the prisoner's death; however, they still refuse to comment on the circumstances and causes of the incident.

On February 15, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by prisoner's father Fuad Ibragimov that the family members learned about the death of 23-year-old Nourani on February 12.

Fuad Ibragimov has noted that his son "never complained about health problems."

"They want to form a negative opinion about Nourani, and they state that he allegedly swallowed a package with drugs, which got torn in his stomach. He was a believer, and he performed prayers since he was 13 years old. He was never involved in such things... We saw signs of violence on his body, including numerous bruises. We make a photo of the bruises on his body in the morgue," Fuad Ibragimov has noted.

Iftikhar Gurbanov, the deputy chief of the Chief Medical Department of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Justice, has confirmed to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent the fact of the death of prisoner Nourani Ibragimov. However, the MoJ's official has refused to comment on the reasons for the prisoner's death.

"The appropriate conclusion will be made following the results of forensic examination," Iftikhar Gurbanov has said.
