Yerevan Mayoralty sanctions rallies on March 1
Two opposition parties – the "Armenian National Congress" (ANC) and the Front of National Salvation "New Armenia" – received permits to hold rallies in Freedom Square, dedicated to the events on March 1, 2008.
On March 1-2, 2008, in Yerevan, there were clashes of law enforcers and the opposition after the rally in the square near the Opera Theatre, conducted by former President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, was dispersed; then, 10 persons perished, and more than 250 others were injured.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has learnt about the sanctioning of the above two rallies at the press service of Yerevan Mayoralty.
The decision to hold a joint rally and march has not been discussed yet, said Levon Zurabyan, Deputy Chairman of the ANC. According to his story, the "New Armenia" has already proposed to hold a joint action.
In his turn, a political analyst Andrias Gukasyan, a member of the Political Council of the Public Safety Front "New Armenia", believes that there are no objective obstacles to holding joint rally and march with the ANC.
He also noted that the Yerevan Mayoralty has again rejected the request of the "New Armenia" to set up tents in Freedom Square during the action on March 1.
