Dagestani resident convicted in Chechnya for possessing grenade
Yesterday, a court in Grozny sentenced Sultanbek Akavov, a resident of Dagestan, to two years in prison, finding him guilty of illicit trafficking in explosives.
A resident of the Babayurt District of Dagestan was detained in Grozny in November 2015, a source from the Chechen Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
"At a personal search, a hand grenade was confiscated from Akavov. He said that he bought it in autumn 2012 from an unidentified person and kept at home in the village of Babayurt. However, he couldn't explain why he had brought the grenade to Grozny," said the source.
On January 27, the Zavodskoy District Court of Grozny found Akavov guilty under Part 1, Article 222.1 of the Russian Criminal Code (trafficking in explosives or explosive devices). According to a source from the Ministry of Justice in Chechnya, the defendant has admitted his guilt.
According to a lawyer from the Bar Association of the Chechen Republic, "it does not make sense" to appeal against the verdict, since at retrial of the case "the punishment may even be more severe."
