Gevorg Safaryan resumes hunger strike

Gevorg Safaryan, a supporter of the National Salvation Front "New Armenia" and member of the "Constituent Parliament", accused of using force against a power official, protests against his transfer to another prison cell.

Gevorg Safaryan, a member of the movement "Constituent Parliament", was detained on New Year's night after a conflict with the police in Freedom Square in Yerevan. On January 3, the court arrested the activist for two months.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 14 Gevorg Safaryan went on a hunger strike demanding to place him in a solitary cell. His protest action was supported his cellmate Yke Kyuregyan, convicted on the case of shooting at the courthouse. On January 16, Safaryan stopped his hunger strike after being place into a solitary cell.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has learnt about the restart of his hunger strike from Tigran Airapetyan, a Safaryan's advocate. He said that today the bosses of the Nubarashen Prison announced a redistribution of the cell, where Safaryan had been kept, and that he will be transferred to the cell, which, according to the advocate, is intended for inmates from the criminal world.

According to the advocate, he has submitted a written petition to the prison authorities demanding to ensure safety of Safaryan's life and health. He expressed concern that in one cell with criminals his client would be in danger.
