Abkhazia hosts international relations conference

The conference titled "Abkhazia in the Context of Modern International Relations" is underway in the resort community of Pitsunda and will last until July 1. The event was organized by the Abkhaz Academy of Sciences, Abkhaz State University and the Humanitarian Programs Center with the assistance of the government of Abkhazia; a British nongovernmental organization, Conciliation Resources; and the University of California, Irvine. The conference is conducted to determine political development prospects for Abkhazia in the context of modern international relations. The conference will consider issues connected with the geopolitical situation about Abkhazia, difficulties of providing conditions for ensuring security and stability in the region, and inner political development trends in Abkhazia.

The conference will comprise the following sections: Development Priorities for Abkhazia - Political, Economic and Regional Aspects; Geopolitical Realities - Third-party Interests; The Process of Democratization in Conditions of Being Unrecognized; International Trends and Prospects for Abkhazia; Ensuring Security and Stability in the Region.

The conference involves scholars from Abkhazia's academic institutions, independent experts, members of parliament, representatives of governmental agencies and nongovernmental organizations and experts from the North Caucasus, Transcaucasia and international organizations.

  • Court releases Malgobek law enforcers accused of extortion

    Three policemen from Ingushetia, accused of using violence against a detainee and extortion, have been released. The Supreme Court (SC) of Ingushetia has explained that the period specified by law for the preliminary investigation had expired and their further detention is illegal.
