Azerbaijani advocate and human rights defender Elton Guliev dies
In Azerbaijan, advocate Elton Guliev died. He was well-known as a defender of the rights of many activists and journalists subjected to prosecution. He was 58 years old, and he died from cancer.
The death of Elton Guliev was reported by his family members. Today, the Baku central mosque "Taza Feast" will hold a ceremony of farewell with Elton Guliev. He will be buried at the Staroyasamal cemetery of the Azerbaijani capital, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
Elton Guliev was born in 1956 in the city of Agdam. He defended many political and public figures, journalists and civil society activists, recognized as political prisoners. In particular, at the beginning of the 2000s, Elton Guliev defended Elmar Guseinov, the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Monitor", who was killed later on the threshold of his apartment.
Elton Guliev also defended the rights of Farkhad Aliev, ex-Minister of Economic Development, who was arrested in October 2005 on charge of an attempt of a coup d'etat, and violation of whose human rights were recognized by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
In recent years, Elton Guliev defended activists of the movement "Nida", human rights defender Intigam Aliev, and journalists Khadija Ismayilova and Seimour Khazi.
