Venice Commission approves Armenia's new draft Constitution

The draft amendments to the Armenia's Constitution have been fully approved by the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe (CE), which described them as "consistent with the international standards of democracy."

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that according to the decree of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, the referendum on the constitutional amendments will be held on December 6. The project considers the transition to a parliamentary system of government.

Members of the Venice Commission have unanimously made the decision during the plenary session in Venice, the RIA "Novosti" reported on October 24 with reference to the press service of the Armenian Parliament.

During the discussion held at the plenary session, which was attended by representatives of 60 countries, members of the Venice Commission have praised the draft of the constitutional reforms in Armenia and called it a document consistent with the international standards of democracy, the "News.am" reports with reference to the press service of the Armenian Parliament.

Let us remind you that on September 1, Artur Sakunts, the head of the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office, stated that the project failed to meet the standards of democracy. During the parliamentary hearings of the draft amendments to the Armenia's Constitution, opponents of the constitutional reforms held actions of protest.
