HRC "Memorial": Chechen SC ignores Karpyuk's testimony about torture

The Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya has refused to record in the protocol of the court session, held on October 12, the testimony given by Ukrainian citizen Nikolai Karpyuk about torture during the preliminary investigation. This was reported by the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 26, investigators reported on the transfer to the court of the case against Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh, who were charged with the leadership and involvement in a criminal grouping, murders, and attempted murders of two or more persons.

According to the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF), in the early 1990s, in the territory of Ukraine, a radical right-wing military political organization "UNA-UNSO" was founded. Ukrainian citizens Nikolai Karpyuk, Stanislav Klykh, Alexander Malofeev, Alexander Muzychko, and other persons became members of the "UNA-UNSO". The Supreme Court (SC) of the Russian Federation has recognized the "UNA-UNSO" an extremist organization and its activities are prohibited on the territory of Russia.

According to the HRC "Memorial", Nikolai Karpyuk said that he was detained at the Russian-Ukrainian border on March 17, 2014, and then he was brought to the FSB Department in Bryansk.

On March 20, 2014, according to the testimony given by Nikolai Karpyuk, he was brought to one of the detention facilities of Yessentuki. Then, according to him, unknown people took him away from the detention facility and subjected him to torture, including torture with electric current.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that on October 9, the HRC "Memorial" stated that the investigating authorities were trying to give Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh the most negative images for the emotional impact on the judge and jurors.
