Victims of Beslan terror act still need psychological help

The commemoration events of the victims of the Beslan terror act should be a reminder to the authorities on their duty to ensure citizens' security, relatives of the victims have stated. Now, 11 years later, the victims of the terror act are still in urgent need of help, said the committee "Mothers of Beslan".

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that this year marks 11 years since the terror act in Beslan; and the city is hosting mourning ceremonies.

On September 1, 2004, militants took 1128 hostages at Beslan School №1. The rescue operation ended on September 3, 2004. The storming killed 334 people, 186 of whom were children.

As a result of the terror act, Alina, a daughter of Bela Tsgoeva, a teacher of School No. 1, received shrapnel wounds of her knees; so far, doctors were unable to remove all the fragments; the girl needs rehabilitation.

"I believe that people must surely remember, especially, officials. Moreover, we believe that it was for their fault that it all happened… because at that moment so many telegrams were sent from Moscow, they warned, but nobody did anything. It could have been prevented… And today it is very important that people remember it, as a reminder to officials of how they should treat their duties," Bela Tsgoeva told "Caucasian Knot".

She added that she hopes for a fair decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

According to Susanna Dudieva, the head of the committee "Mothers of Beslan", despite the fact that 11 years expired since the tragedy, victims still need psychological help.

"The help rendered by psychologists during first years was very helpful. It was an emergency help that enabled people to get out of the stressful situation," Susanna Dudieva told the "Caucasian Knot".

However, as she said, in those days not all of the victims made use of psychologists' help.

"Now, 11 years later, I know for myself that a psychologist's help is a must. I understand quite well that many people need such help; now it won't be the emergency held, because they're not under stress – they are in depression," she said.
