Armenian GPO starts inquiry into disperse of protesters
The legality of policemen's actions on June 23 in Yerevan will be checked by the Special Investigating Service, said Gevorg Kostanyan, the General Public Prosecutor of Armenia.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since June 19 Armenia is holding mass protests against the authorities' decision to raise the electricity tariff. The largest round-the-clock action is taking place in Bagramyan Avenue in Yerevan. At night on June 23, the police began dispersing protesters; and about 240 persons were detained. Activists argue that 25 persons sought medical help.
Zaruhi Postanjyan, an MP from the oppositional "Heritage" Party condemned the police's actions and demanded that perpetrators should be punished, the "News-Armenia" reports.
Let us remind you that 16 Armenian citizens, who were among the dispersed protesters, filed a complaint against the police to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
