Water level in Sochi rivers drops below danger mark
The situation in Sochi districts flooded by heavy rain has stabilized. The water level in local rivers dropped down to a safe mark.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the precipitations that affected Sochi on June 25 reached the six-week norm. During a heavy rain, rivers overbanked; and dwelling settlements in the Adler and Khosta Districts were flooded. Authorities warned citizens about a threat of tornadoes.
In the evening, rescuers found the body of a man who perished in the Adler District of the resort city; he has not been identified yet.
As of the midnight Moscow time, the area of the Adler railway station was cleaned from water. The water level in rivers dropped; and water is pumped off at all flooded areas, says the website of the Chief Department for the Krasnodar Territory of the Ministry for Emergencies (MfE) of Russia.
The Russian MfE reports: "The most difficult situation is in the settlement of Mirny. Additionally, 80 specialists and 20 units of machinery were sent there from the Don Rescue Centre of the MfE."
The city has set up a commission to appraise the volume of damage caused by the calamity.
Let us remind you that flooding regularly occurs in the Khosta, Adler and Lazarevskoe Districts of Sochi. Locals believe that the rainfall water removal system cannot cope with a strong stream of water. According to their story, the earlier Sochi drainage system was destroyed during the Olympic construction; and even the Olympic sites were not equipped with rainfall water removal facilities.
