Georgia appeals to EU for help
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has appealed to the EU countries with a request for financial and expert assistance in the elimination of the aftermath of the flooding in Tbilisi.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at night of June 14, in Tbilisi, several streets and houses were flooded as a result of heavy rain. Buildings and infrastructure were destroyed. The officially confirmed death toll is 14 persons. In Georgia, the day of June 15 is declared a day of mourning for the victims.
According to the press service of the government of Georgia, the meeting with EU ambassadors was attended by David Bakradze, the Georgian State Minister for Integration into European and Euro-Atlantic Institutions, Tamar Beruchashvili, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Tea Tsulukiani, the Minister of Justice.
Besides, the Ministry of Finance of Georgia has opened bank accounts in local and foreign currencies to raise funds to help victims of the disaster. The Georgian Parliament has also decided to transfer one million laris (444,440 US dollars) in favour of the families affected by the flooding in Tbilisi.
People deprived of their houses are accommodated at hotels. Tbilisi residents collect clothes and food for the victims of the flooding. Ukraine, Russia, and Armenia announced their readiness to render assistance to Georgia to eliminate the aftermath of the disaster.
