Council of Europe demands to release Ilgar Mamedov until September

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CMCE) has announced its intention to consider the issue on taking "strict measures", if Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the opposition movement "Republican Alternative", is not released from prison by the Azerbaijan's authorities until September 2015.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Ilgar Mamedov and Tofiq Yagublu, the Deputy Chairman of the "Musavat" Party, were sentenced to seven and five years of imprisonment, respectively, on charges of organizing the riots in the town of Ismayilly on January 23-24, 2013.

Fuad Agaev has emphasized that according to the CMCE, the ECtHR found a violation of the rights of Ilgar Mamedov under Article 5 (right to liberty and security), Article 6 (right to the presumption of innocence), and Article 18 (limitations and restrictions on the rights). The advocate has noted that the CMCE is seriously concerned over the fact that the consideration of the appeal filed by Ilgar Mamedov to the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan has been postponed for an indefinite period. The CMCE has appealed to the supreme bodies of state power of Azerbaijan and announced its intention to return to the issue in September 2015.
