Armenia: PSRC chairman announces increase in electricity tariffs since August 1

On August 1, the electricity tariffs for Armenian consumers will grow by 6.9-7 drams per 1 kW/h. This was announced by Robert Nazaryan, the Chairman of the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC). The Public Council has sent a letter to the Armenian President with the request to prevent the increase in tariffs.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 8, the Closed Joint-Stock Company (CJSC) "Electric Grid of Armenia" addressed the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) with a proposal to increase the daily electricity tariff for consumers from 41.85 drams per 1 kW/h up to 58.93 drams and the night electricity tariff from 31.85 drams up to 48.93 drams per 1 kW/h. On June 2, Robert Nazaryan, the Chairman of the PSRC, announced that the PSRC recognized the proposal of the "Electric Grid of Armenia" reasonable and that the electricity tariffs would be raised. On May 27, 15 cities of Armenia held protest actions against the increase in electricity tariffs.

On June 8, on air of the "R-Evolution" TV programme of the "Armenia" TV Channel, Robert Nazaryan reported that the electricity tariffs would be raised starting from August 1. Meanwhile, Robert Nazaryan has noted that the CJSC "Electric Grid of Armenia" has accumulated a debt in the amount of 109 billion drams, of which 37 billion drams are to be repaid by the "Electric Grid of Armenia" within a year "through increase in tariffs for consumers."
