Armenian experts advise Yerevan to voice clear claims to Turkey concerning genocide

The process of recognizing the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey should be continued in the clear formulation of claims by Armenia, which still has not been prepared. This was declared by participants of the "round table" "On the way to the 101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey: a new stage?", which took place in Yerevan on April 29.

According to Ruben Melkonyan, the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies of the Yerevan State University, the issue of claims has not been clearly formulated by Armenia, "since there are a lot of Armenians, and thus there are a lot of different demands."

"Some of Armenians lost their houses, others lost something more, and it is very difficult to technically calculate the volume of losses and claims. However, the genocide is a crime, and any crime should be followed by a logical continuation: punishment, regret, and compensation. Therefore, it is very important to formulate clear claims on the state level to be developed by lawyers, historians, and scientists," Ruben Melkonyan has emphasized.

After the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey, it is a fact that the "Armenian issue" has become more recognizable in the world, Ruben Melkonyan claims. He has also added that the statement made by Pope Francis has become a new milestone in the process of recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that residents of Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh, and the Armenian Diaspora marked the day of April 24 as the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1923. The year of 2015 marks the 100th anniversary since the beginning of that tragic event. On April 24, Yerevan hosted a torchlight procession. On April 23, Armenia canonized 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1923.
