Khadija Ismayilova awarded Barbara Goldsmith's Award "Freedom to Write"

The Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova, who is under arrest, has been awarded the Barbara Goldsmith "Freedom to Write" Award of the American PEN Centre. Dozens of US sports journalists have joined the call of the PEN Centre to release Ismayilova from custody on the eve of the First European Games in Baku.

The Barbara Goldsmith Award is presented annually to individuals arrested and prosecuted for their professional activities. Since 1987, 39 persons were honoured with this award; and 35 of them were later released.

Ms Ismayilova has been awarded the Barbara Goldsmith "Freedom to Write" Award for 2015, says the statement of the American PEN Centre, released on April 16. The awarding ceremony will take place on May 5 at the Museum of Natural History of America in New York. On behalf of Ismayilova, the award will be received by Emin Milli, an Azerbaijani journalist and blogger, and a former "prisoner of conscience".
