Russian military base granted new territories in Gyumri
The Armenian Government has approved the granting of new territory to the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri.
The 102nd military base of the Russian Ministry of Defence deployed in Gyumri was founded on September 1, 1994, in accordance with the directive of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation. The number of staff members of the military base is 3083 persons. The military base is divided into two garrisons: Yerevan and Gyumri.
The Russian military base is granted a land plot in Lalayan Street in Gyumri, where the temple of the Russian Orthodox Church is located. Together with the territory, the Armenian government has decided to grant a land plot in No. 173/3 near the temple, together with all buildings.
The territories granted to the Russian military base consist of land plots with areas of 3812 ha, 1948 ha, and 1.9 ha.
According to Seiran Oganyan, the Armenian Minister of Defence, the leaders of the Russian military base plan to build a religious centre in the territory granted.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in August 2010, during the visit of the Russian President to Armenia, the protocol on the extension of the Russian-Armenian treaty of 1995 was signed. According to it, the Russian military base can be deployed in the Armenian city of Gyumri until 2044.
