Russian SC upholds verdict against Timur Tangiev
The Russian Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed the appeals filed by Timur Tangiev, a resident of Grozny, and his defence against the verdict announced by the Supreme Court of Chechnya.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 5, 2004, Timur Tangiev was sentenced to 24 years of imprisonment on charges of committing grave and especially grave crimes. However, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has found that while in custody, Timur Tangiev was tortured, and the Presidium of the SC sent the case back for re-consideration.
The trial was held at the Supreme Court of Chechnya with the participation of jurors, who on September 23, 2014, found Timur Tangiev guilty on all the paragraphs of the indictment. The defence filed a complaint against the verdict.
At the today's session, the Russian SC checked the defence's claims concerning violations of the law committed during the consideration of the case in the lower courts. As a result, the SC has decided to dismiss the appeals.
Let us remind you that, according to advocates, while the Timur Tangiev's case was considered at the Supreme Court of Chechnya, the jurors and witnesses in the case were subjected to pressure. According to the advocates, the direction of the case for a re-consideration followed by the announcement of an objective verdict would be a kind of "road map" for judicial reconciliation in Northern Caucasus.
