46 inmates of Gldani Prison are on hunger strike in Georgia

46 prisoners, sentenced to life imprisonment, are on hunger strike at Gldani Prison No. 8, demanding revision of their cases and amending the law on amnesty. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed about it at the Ministry of Corrections, Probation and Legal Assistance.

The prisoners went on their endless hunger on January 26. Among them, there are three residents of South Ossetia: Georgy Zasseev, Georgy Valiev and Soso Kochiev. According to Lyudmila Usovich, Zasseev's mother, she called her son on January 30; and he spoke in a weak voice, because he consumed nothing but water.

The above Ministry claims that the prisoners' health condition is satisfactory.

On February 9, the hunger-strikers were visited by Gela Nikoleishvili, an activist of the NGO "Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights" and a member of the Georgian Bar Association. According to his story, this is the longest hunger strike among the prisoners over the past few years; and "there are no prerequisites to ensure the settlement of the situation."

Mr Nikoleishvili believes that the hunger strike may stop if "the president or the government pardons at least one or two life prisoners." To date, the protesters are covered by no relief, he added.
