Lawyer beaten up after trial on terror act in house of Sheikh Chirkey in Dagestan (+video)

The advocate Murad Magomedov was beaten up near the building of the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan after a court session on the terror act committed in the house of Sheikh Chirkey, said the lawyer Rinat Gamidov.

Let us remind you that Murad Magomedov is defending one of the figurants in the trial of the explosion, which killed the religious figure Said Apandi of Chirkey and six other people.

"The session was absolutely calm; but during lunch, a colleague called me and said that Murad was beaten up, right opposite the SC, at the doors of the Bar. Eyewitnesses said that the attackers were from the suffered party," said Rinat Gamidov.

Murad Magomedov was attacked by several persons in front of the SC of Dagestan in Makhachkala. Now, he is in hospital in grave condition, said Oleg Orlov, a member of the board of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial".

"This attack on the man, who carried out his professional duties under the law and the Constitution, and defended human rights, must be investigated and those responsible should be punished," said Orlov.

He recalled that in Dagestan, this is not the first attack on advocates. "In Dagestan, lawyers are beaten up, including by law enforcers; lawyers are threatened in Dagestan; and, unfortunately, lawyers are killed in Dagestan," said Orlov, calling on the authorities "to think about what's going on within the legal sphere."
