Court session on suit of Chechen MIA against Amriev who stated torture by police postponed till December 25

The consideration of the claim lodged by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Chechen Republic against the athlete Murad Amriev, who stated that he had been kidnapped and tortured at the police of Grozny, has been postponed till December 25, said Sergey Babinets, the defendant's advocate and a lawyer of the Committee against Torture (CaT).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in September 2013 Murad Amriev turned to the Joint Mobile Group (JMG) of rights defenders, which comprises members of the CaT, for help, saying that on August 25, 2013, he was kidnapped and tortured for two days in the building of the MIA Department of Grozny. On June 27, 2014, officials of the Chechen MIA went to the court against Amriev on protection of honour, dignity and business reputation.

"On December 15 we petitioned about rescheduling the court session, since all the documents, necessary to represent the interests of the defendant, burned down on December 13 during a fire in our office," said Sergey Babinets.

Let us note here that the MIA demands to recognize the information spread by Amriev as untrue, and oblige him to publish a refutation and collect compensation of moral harm from him.
