Armenian Parliament discusses accession to EAEU against protest actions

The Parliament of Armenia continues discussing the treaty of Armenia's accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Suren Karayan, the Deputy Finance Minister, said that Armenia's accession to the EAEU would positively affect the economy; however, problems can arise only on the part of the WTO treaty.

The debates take place against the background of protests held in front of the National Assembly. Activists urge MPs not to ratify the treaty.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 25 the Parliament began hearings on the accession to the EAEU.

The MPs raised the issues of increased prices on goods and services in Armenia after joining the EAEU. Karayan noted that "the increase in prices expected upon Armenia's accession to the EAEU has nothing to do with more expensive goods, which may grow in price because of the currency fluctuation of currency in the country."

Earlier, Armenian experts highlighted controversial points in the Armenia's accession treaty to the EAEU. Thus, Vahagn Khachatryan, the ex-Mayor of Yerevan, has stated the deficiencies related to exporters' rights, clearance of goods at the borders, and legal problems. Karen Kocharyan, a political strategist, has suggested that Armenia will become a full-fledged member of the EAEU only after equalling customs tariffs.
