ECtHR urgently demands explanations from Azerbaijani authorities on Intigam Aliev’s case

As a part of the procedural "provisional measures", the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has urgently requested the Azerbaijani government to provide answers to questions regarding the health state of the rights defender Intigam Aliev. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Djavad Djavadov, an advocate of Intigam Aliev.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Nasimi District Court of Baku, acting under the presentation of the Prosecutor's Office, arrested Intigam Aliev for three months; and the Court of Appeal (CoA) upheld the decision. Aliev is accused of tax evasion, abuse of power and illegal entrepreneurship. On September 12, 2014, Baku district court dismissed the petition lodged by Intigam Aliev, asking to change his freedom restraint from custody to home arrest.

On October 8, during the consideration of the issue on the extension of Intigam Aliev's arrest, the defendant felt bad. According to the advocate, "his right leg got paralyzed, and he was quickly transported back to the SIZO (pre-trial prison) in a separate paddy wagon."

Because of the sharp deterioration in the health state of Intigam Aliev, his defence has sent an appeal to the ECtHR with a request to accept the Intigam Aliev's case for urgent consideration.

"In the evening of November 10, we received an official response. In accordance with Rule 39, the ECtHR has addressed its questions to the Government of Azerbaijan, and the latter shall respond by November 17. Meanwhile, in our turn, we, the advocates, appeal to the Government asking to change the pre-trial restriction measure for Intigam Aliev," Djavad Djavadov has noted.
