Azerbaijani civil activists commemorate slain journalist Guseinov

On July 17, media people of Azerbaijan attended a rally held near the tomb of Elmar Guseinov, the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Monitor", on the occasion of his 47th birthday. They announced their decision to intensify the activities of the Elmar Guseinov Foundation and conduct their own inquiry into his murder.

Despite the fact that more than nine years have passed since the murder of Elmar Guseinov, the crime remains unsolved, said Emin Guseinov, the Director of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS). Azerbaijani law enforcement bodies have failed to conduct any active investigation of Elmar's murder, Emin said in his interview to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

He added that another direction of the activities of the above Foundation "will be the continuation of Elmar Guseinov's journalistic business and training a new generation of media professionals in the creative style and methods, for what the late editor of the 'Monitor' magazine was notable." For this purpose it is planned to find the money for holding journalistic contests and awarding the winners.

In their turn, Azerbaijani law enforcers explain the absence of progress in the inquiry into Elmar Guseinov's murder by the refusal of Georgian authorities to answer their requests related to citizens of Georgia suspected under this case.
