South Ossetia adopts law on NGOs in final reading

Today, the Parliament of South Ossetia has adopted, in the second and final reading, the law on non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The term "foreign agent" to be applied to the NGOs funded from abroad is replaced by the term "foreign partner".

"Under the request of NGO activists, the Parliament decided to work together with them on the terminology issue. After discussions and consultations, the parliamentary committee on legislation, law and local self-government has proposes to replace the term 'foreign agent' by the term 'foreign partner' and pass the bill with these amendments," said Amiran Dyakonov, the chairman of the above committee of the South-Ossetian Parliament.

The NGO activists who were present at the session of the Parliament of South Ossetia expressed their disagreement with the essence of the law.

According to Dina Alborova, the director of the "Agency for Socio-Economic and Cultural Development of South Ossetia", the NGOs working in the republic disagree with the new wording of the law and will address their proposals for making amendments already in the new parliament to be elected in June this year.
