Azerbaijan: at trial of "Nida" activists, advocates present their final speeches

The defence lawyers have announced their final speeches to the court engaged in trying the "Nida" activists. All of them declared innocence of their clients and asked for acquittal. The defendants' last pleas are scheduled for May 1.

Ali Kerimli, the leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), said in his comment after the session that "the political character of the trial is obvious."

The Public Alliance "Azerbaijan without Political Prisoners" issued a statement urging the court to pass "a fair verdict of acquittal" in relation to "Nida" activists.

"The young people were illegally arrested and subjected to physical and psychological pressure. Violations of the law continued at the trial. These young people are pursued only for their intention to peacefully express their protest against soldiers' deaths and promote democratic changes," said Elshan Gasanov, the head of the Alliance.
