Georgian Ombudsman offers Parliament to set up commission on cases of ex-political prisoners
In Georgia, in connection with the ongoing protest action held by amnestied political prisoners, the Ombudsman's Office has offered the Georgian Parliament to set up a commission for rehabilitation of political prisoners. This was reported on April 3 by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
In December 2012, the Georgian Parliament recognized as political prisoners 190 persons serving their sentences in penitentiary institutions. In January 2013, the Law "On Amnesty" was adopted. Under the Law, all 190 persons recognized as political prisoners were released.
"The Ombudsman's Office recommends setting up a mechanism (a commission) which will finally reconsider the cases against those persons to free them from charges," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Natiya Katsitadze, the head of the department of justice at the Ombudsman's Office.
Natiya Katsitadze has also stated that the Parliament is to begin considering the cases of amnestied political prisoners in late April; however, she did not mention the exact date.
