Russian politicians see no way for Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's accession to Russia by "Crimean scenario"
Russian political analysts believe that joining of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to Russia by "Crimean scenario" is hardly possible. Although citizens of South Ossetia would be glad to join Russia, such a move is not beneficial for Russia at the moment. This was stated by Konstantin Zatulin, President of the Institute of CIS countries.
"At present, Russia is going towards restoring relations with Georgia, where the country is ruled not by Mikhail Saakashvili, but by his political opponents. After the Crimean referendum, the ship of compromises has already been overloaded, and it would be illogical to add there the Georgian excitement that is extinct or frozen at the time," Konstantin Zatulin has said in his interview to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
Nikolai Petrov, a Russian political analyst, agrees that at present, Russia is quite satisfied with the status quo on South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
"No economic and political arguments can be mentioned in favour of the scenario. Unlike Crimea, South Ossetia is not a tasty morsel. That would create more problems than benefits," Nikolai Petrov commented on the situation for the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
As far as Abkhazia is concerned, Nikolai Petrov has stated that the local political elite does not want to join the Russian Federation.
