On January 6-12, fourteen persons suffered in armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week from January 6 to January 12, 2014, at least 14 people fell victim to the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus; 10 of them were killed and four others were wounded. These are the results of the calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

The death toll includes three suspected members of the armed underground in Dagestan and seven civilians – six in the Stavropol Territory and one in Dagestan.

Attacks on law enforcers

On January 8, in Dezhnyov Street in Makhachkala, policemen carried out their operative-preventive actions, when they noticed a man who was behaving suspiciously and tried to check his documents. The man began running away and opened fire. He was shot dead by response fire and was later identified as a 20-year-old Ruslan Kozik.

On January 11, a mobile post of the road-and-post service (known as DPS), located between the villages of Dugulubgey and Kishpek in the Baksan District of Kabardino-Balkaria, was shelled. The attack wounded a police officer – a commander of a SOBR (fast-reaction special detachment) from the Republic of Tuva. The attackers fled in a car they had hijacked from a local resident.

On January 11, in an abandoned sheep shed in the outskirts of the village of Chontaul, Kizilyurt District of Dagestan, two unidentified persons rendered armed resistance to federal forces. During the shootout, both suspected militants were killed.

Special and counterterrorist operations

On January 11, the city of Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, was put under the counterterrorist operation (CTO) regime. Five alleged members of an international terrorist organization were detained. According to the Russian National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC), they confessed that they had prepared a series of attacks in the territory of Kabardino-Balkaria. When examining the venues of special operations, law enforcers found ammunition, grenades and a ready to use bomb with the power of about two kilograms of TNT (trotyl) equivalent.

Explosions and terror acts

On January 6, on the motor road near the village of Chontaul, Kizilyurt District of Dagestan, a homemade landmine went off on the way of a police KamAZ truck. The explosion caused a slight contusion to an inspector of the special company of the investigating-operative group of the separate battalion of the patrol-and-post service of the division "Kizilyurtovsky" and another policeman from that division.

Attacks on civilians

On January 8, near the entrance to the village of Tambukan in the Predgorny District of the Stavropol Territory, a VAZ-2107 car was found with a dead body of a local resident with a gunshot wound in his head inside. Later, when investigators arrived at the scene, a bomb went off next to the car; fortunately, nobody was hurt. In the village of Zolskoe, Kirov District of the Stavropol Territory, a VAZ-2105 car was found with a man's body with a gunshot wound inside. At a distance of five meters from the car, an explosive device was found.

In the same village, in the neighbouring street, another VAZ-2107 car was found, where a dead body with a gunshot wound was placed into the luggage trunk. Later, in the village of Maryinskaya, another car was found with three men's bodies inside. An explosive device was detected near the car and destroyed on the spot.

On January 12, entrepreneur Ruslan Muduev was shot dead in Makhachkala. His body with gunshot wounds was found in the entrance of the house where he lived. Muduev was the head of the housing construction cooperative "Versailles".
