Users of social networks in Baku prepare action in support of Zaur Gasanov; doctors say his condition is critical

In Azerbaijan, users of the Facebook have appointed an action for December 28 in connection with the attempted self-immolation of Zaur Gasanov, a Category II invalid and veteran of the Karabakh War. The action under the slogan "Stop burning down veterans!" is planned in Fountain Square in downtown of Baku. Gasanov is in critical condition, doctors say.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 25, Zaur Gasanov, 42, a father of five children, made a self-immolation attempt in the centre of Baku, in front of the Azerbaijani Trade Unions Confederation (TUC). In this way he expressed his protest against confiscation of his cafe.

A rally in support of Zaur Gasanov was initiated by the members of the group that was formed on the Facebook by Asif Yusifli.

In his appeal, Yusifli called citizens not to remain indifferent to the fate of the disabled Karabakh War veteran. "In the country that is at war and which has 20 percent of its territory occupied, a self-immolation of the Karabakh War invalid must stagger everyone's conscience. It's a shame!" Mr Yusifli wrote.

He offers to move out the following demands during the rally: force the MP Sattar Mekhbalyev, the boss of the TUC, to apologize; eliminate the injustice committed against veteran Gasanov; and call for the recovery of his property.
