Reason for Armenia's accession to Customs Union were hidden from public, opposition asserts

Armenia's accession to the Customs Union is the sole decision of President Serzh Sargsyan. The reason for the accession and the expected result are not clear to the public, since all information about the Customs Union and the association agreement with the European Union is closed. This is stated by representatives of the opposition parties of the country.

"Serzh Sargsyan makes sole decisions, and the political elite are not aware and not informed about them. Neither the political elite, nor the government, and no one at all in Armenia have any clue to understand what the Customs Union is, and how to treat it. And the same applies to the association agreement," says Aram Manukyan, Vice-Chairman of the "Armenian National Congress" (ANC) Party, an MP from the same faction.

"The power in Armenia has been usurped, and that fact affects the internal situation in the country and leads to disastrous consequences in foreign policy," stated Raffi Ovannisyan, the leader of the opposition "Heritage" Party, at the press conference held on September 17.

According to his statement, at present, the independence and sovereignty of Armenia are under threat.

Let us remind you that the declaration of Armenia's intent to join the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan was signed on September 3 in Moscow at the meeting of Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin. Yerevan hosted actions of protest against the country's accession to the Customs Union.
